How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
Anti-wrinkle treatments work by stopping the signal between the nerve and muscle which relaxes the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. The treatment relaxes only the muscles beneath the lines where the product has been injected. The muscles responsible for other aspects of facial expression stay active.
Muscle movement causes dynamic lines which only appear when the muscle is used. Over time, these wrinkles can become static lines which means they become permanently visible on our skin even when our facial muscles are resting.
Having anti-wrinkle injections before the development of permanent static wrinkles is recommended however even those with static wrinkles can receive great results with anti-wrinkle injections as this will prevent the static lines worsening.
What does the treatment involve?
A small amount of the anti-wrinkle product is injected into specific facial muscles with a very fine needle. Typically, any pain is minimal and brief. No anaesthetic is required for this procedure.
How long will the procedure take?
The expected duration of this procedure is 10 – 30 minutes.
What to expect after treatment?
After treatment, we will ask you not to rub or touch the treated area and to keep upright for 4 hours and to avoid any strenuous activity for the rest of the day following treatment.
Avoiding non-prescription medications that thin the blood (ie; fish oil, ibuprofen, aspirin) for a few days before and after treatment can reduce your risk of bruising.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
The full effect of the anti wrinkle injections is generally seen around 10 – 14 days post treatment. Treatment effects usually last 3 – 4 months and the effects gradually decrease over time.
If you have no further anti-wrinkle treatments, the muscles return to normal and lines gradually go back to how they looked before treatment.
Do I need a follow up?
A follow up is recommended at 2 weeks to evaluate your response to the treatment at its peak of effectiveness. At this appointment, we can treat any areas that may require an adjustment.
