How does Deoxycholic Acid (double chin reduction) work?

Sub mental fullness or “double chin” as it is more commonly known, is a common concern for men and women alike. Deoxycholic acid is licensed for the treatment of fullness under the chin. The best results are seen in patients with a body mass index (BMI) within the normal range, who have a localised fat deposit beneath their chin. Often these patients feel that they do not have a defined jawline, or that their face appears to blend into their neck.

Deoxycholic acid is a synthetic, non-animal form of a substance found naturally in the body. Deoxycholic acid is one of your body’s bile acids that aid in the breakdown and absorption of fat cells. When injected below the chin, deoxycholic acid causes disruption of the biological membrane around the fat cells in that region, triggering destruction of those fat cells in a process called adipocytolysis.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatment area is measured and temporary markings are drawn onto the skin as an injection guide. Ice is applied to chill the skin for comfort. Local anaesthetic may be injected into the treatment area to numb the skin. Multiple small injections of Deoxycholic acid are then performed with a very thin needle through the skin into the fat layer.

The number of treatments given varies depending upon the amount of fat in the area. The average patient requires between 2 to 4 treatments performed a minimum of 6 weeks apart.

How long will the procedure take?

The procedure takes about 30 minutes and you can return to most daily activities right away.

What to expect after treatment?

There will be considerable swelling on the chin area for several days so it is best not to have any social arrangements following treatment.

When will I see results and how long will they last?

Since the body takes some time to metabolise the fat cells that have been destroyed in the adipocytolysis process, you may not see visible results until after the 2nd or 3rd treatment. Results from this treatment are permanent.

Do I need a follow up?

As this treatment requires 2 – 4 treatments to achieve a good cosmetic result, your follow up will be at your subsequent appointments, however if you have any concerns between appointments, please let the clinic know.
