What is 3D Mole Mapping?

Three dimensional mole mapping, also called 3 Dimensional Total Body Photography (3D-TBP) with AI assisted total body surveillance is a substantial technological advancement and a promising innovation for early skin cancer and melanoma detection. 3D-TBP centres around whole body digital mapping, longitudinal tracking and AI-assisted lesion triage. Whilst the currently available models are useful and accessible tools for lesion tracking, structured skin surveillance and change detection, the AI models’ current ability to classify lesions is not a replacement for skin checks performed by an experienced doctor trained in dermoscopy.

How Does 3D Mole Mapping Work?

Baseline creation: Over 100 high-definition images are captured in about one minute while you wear undergarments. A 3D mole map is generated showing the location of moles and lesions.

Comparison: Follow up sessions repeat the imaging and AI software flags new or changing moles and lesions.

Examination: Flagged changes are evaluated as part of a skin check using dermoscopy performed by one of our doctors. Total body photography is not an alternative to full skin checks.

How long will 3D Mole Mapping take?

The imaging only takes about 1 minute, the entire process, including undressing and dressing, can take around 10 minutes. 3D rendering takes approximately 10 minutes and a skin check usually takes about 20 minutes.

How often should I have 3D mole mapping?

That depends on your personal risk level. Total body photography is typically repeated every 6-12 months for high risk individuals or 12 monthly for standard skin monitoring alongside your yearly skin check.

Having a baseline 3D scan is a good start and your doctor will be able to advise you on the most appropriate interval based on your skin type, sun damage, medical history, family history of melanoma and number of moles.

Why 3D Mole Mapping as well as skin checks?

A skin check by a doctor experienced in dermoscopy and TBP operate at different scales. Dermoscopy works on a microscopic scale, whereas TBP works on a macroscopic (full body) scale. Dermoscopy and total body photography are complementary skin imaging techniques.

How are my images stored?

Your images are stored securely using encrypted clinical software. Your images form part of your clinical record and can be accessed only by your doctor and clinical staff. You can access your own images on request.

What are the fees and rebates for 3D Mole Mapping?

Mole Mapping is currently not covered by Medicare. The fee for 3D-TBP is $250 including GST. Pensioner Discount is available. The fee does not include the cost of the skin check by the doctor.

How should I prepare?

  1. Please don’t wear make-up or fake tan
  2. Tie your hair up. If you have long hair, tie it up to keep your face and neck visible
  3. Remove glasses and jewellery
  4. Body hair. If you are very hairy, you may wish to consider shaving before your appointment
  5. Wear plain underwear

Patients frequently do not notice skin changes themselves, particularly when they have large numbers of moles or lesions. Total-body photography combined with digital dermoscopy creates a photographic baseline so doctors can identify new or changing moles over time. Most atypical moles remain harmless and stable, while detectable changes can help identify very early melanomas that may not initially look suspicious. Using digital monitoring we can detect melanoma earlier while reducing unnecessary excisional biopsies of moles.
